ABOUT US

The responsibility to establish an art troupe which would, in an honest and responsible manner, enter the scene and try to remain on it, was enforced on us by a desperate state of affairs the culture found itself in, and by a desire to freely embody our own ideas, freed from any kind of institutional constraint. Although the troupe was officially established in the autumn of 2007, its centre, made of Milorad Kapor, Milovan Filipović and Žanko Tomić, was formed in 1998, after a successful cooperation in the play “On foot” in the Serbian National Theatre, which was awarded the title of the cultural event of the season in Novi Sad by a part of the theatre public. In the meantime, besides the work in the mother institutions where we are employed, we have been independently starting some of the most important multi-media troupes in Novi Sad and Belgrade.Our superb aim is, besides realization of important project, to gather quality artists around us as well as people with good ideas and creative energy. The Yorick troupe makes theatre performances, short films, feature-length films and documentaries, organizes thematic workshops and events in music and visual arts, initiates experimental and innovating forms of art and culture, initiates modern topics in culture and debates in society by engaging in multicultural cooperation on a local, regional and international level.The fact that more and more young people find themselves in the troupe’s work is the proof that we are going right way.

XXX: The public and the press have not always been fair to you. In that respect, I would like to quote Roosevelt, who once said – It is not the critic who counts, not the man who points out how the strong man stumbled, or where the doer of deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena; whose face is marred by the dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again. There is not effort without error and shortcomings.

AAA: Now, Roosevelt put it so nicely, didn’t he? Those lines are not only about a single field, a single profession, they are about all those who, regardless of the obstacles and the negativities and the slim chances of success, keep going, persistently and bravely. The public can be ruthless! And it has been. But, I’m working for my own sake, and because I like it and because it makes me happy. That’s why I’m going to quote on, from where you stopped, and I’m going to finish: “But who does actually strive to do the deed; who knows the great enthusiasm, the great devotion, who spends himself in a worthy cause, who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement and who at the worst, if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly. So that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat.”

XXX: And, two roads diverged in a wood, and you took the one less travelled by. And that has made all the difference.

AAA: Precisely. Exactly. I dared. And I still dare to embark into the uncertain, the unexplored, to places I want to go, not to places others tell me to. My decisions are what defines me, not my obedience. If I am to fall, I will go down fighting all the way, like a man. And, if I am to rise, I will rise like a man. I am not an obedient, spineless man, who lets others run his own life, who sinks or swims on, depending on other people’s action. You know, as Dr. Martin Luther King would say: “I have a dream!”

XXX: I believe nothing else needs to be said.
